The Story of the Rooster That Wouldn’t Crow is a tale designed to develop a child’s cognitive skills. At the same time, it is an enjoyable and engaging story that presents a problem faced by a farmer. This problem encourages children to think of solutions, thereby enhancing their thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Story Events: Farmer Harpole owned a large farm for growing various crops. However, due to a severe drought this summer, Uncle Harpole was unable to plant his summer crops. The poor weather meant the seeds would not grow well, and he would not have a successful harvest this year.

Farmer Harpole Considers an Alternative Project: Farmer Harpole began to think of an alternative idea for this season’s crops so that he could earn enough money to support himself and his family. After deep thought, he decided to start a poultry farming project.

Even though Uncle Harpole had no experience in raising poultry, he planned to sell the eggs produced each day to earn a living. Uncle Harpole went to the fields of Uncle MacHenry, a poultry dealer, and purchased twelve hens and a rooster. He returned home, built a small wooden coop on the farm, and settled the chickens and the rooster inside.

The Rooster That Wouldn’t Crow: At dawn the next day, Uncle Harpole heard the sound of a cow calling, “Moo… Moo…” Uncle Harpole thought he was dreaming because he didn’t own a cow. He went back to sleep, but he heard the mooing again: “Moo… Moo!” Uncle Harpole, his wife, and his daughter all woke up because of the loud noise the cow was making.

Uncle Harpole rushed outside to find the source of the sound. He looked here and there but couldn’t find a cow. His wife suggested that perhaps it was a stray cow that had lost its owner.

Uncle Harpole Discovers the Source: While Uncle Harpole was talking to his wife, he heard the sound again. He spun around and found the rooster he had just bought standing on top of the wooden coop, shouting, “Moo… Moo!”

The Secret Behind the Cow-Sounding Rooster: Astonished, Uncle Harpole approached the rooster and asked, “Are you the one making that cow sound?” The rooster nodded and said, “Yes.” Uncle Harpole asked him, “But roosters don’t go ‘Moo, moo.’ A rooster’s sound is ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo!’” The rooster replied, “I know that.”

“Then why are you making that annoying cow noise and waking the neighbors?” Harpole asked. The rooster replied sadly, “Because I miss my friend, the cow, who was with me at Uncle MacHenry’s farm. I promised her I would keep calling out in her voice as long as I am away from her.” Uncle Harpole said, “But you belong to me now. I bought you from Uncle MacHenry to live on our farm; you cannot go back again.”

Uncle Harpole Warns the Rooster: Uncle Harpole left the farm after warning the rooster not to make that annoying cow sound ever again. However, at dawn the next day, the rooster mooed even louder: “Mooo… Mooo… Mooo!” Uncle Harpole’s neighbors woke up annoyed by the noise and told Uncle Harpole he must find a solution for this rooster, as it was disturbing everyone’s sleep.

Uncle Harpole’s Dilemma: Uncle Harpole met with his wife and daughter to brainstorm a solution to this problem, which had become a nuisance to the entire neighborhood. Uncle Harpole’s wife suggested selling the rooster to get rid of it and buying a new one.

Uncle Harpole took the rooster back to Uncle MacHenry’s farm, but the dealer refused to take him back. Uncle Harpole returned home in despair and told his wife that Uncle MacHenry wouldn’t accept a return after the sale.

The family met again to think of another solution. His daughter suggested taking the rooster to the market to sell him there. Uncle Harpole took the rooster to the market, but he found that the story of the mooing rooster had already spread through the town. No one agreed to buy such an annoying bird.

Uncle Harpole returned home sad once again. He began searching for a third solution to get rid of the troublesome rooster, especially since Uncle MacHenry refused to take him back and no one at the market would buy him.

Uncle Harpole tried talking to the rooster again to stop him from mooing, but it was no use. Every dawn, the rooster would moo louder than before, expressing how much he missed his friend the cow from the old farm.

Uncle Harpole Finds the Solution: Finally, after days of deep thought, Uncle Harpole came up with a brilliant solution. He decided to buy the cow from Uncle MacHenry, and then sell the cow and the rooster together to a petting zoo, where they could remain a funny attraction for children.

The next day, Uncle Harpole rushed to the petting zoo and told them the story of the rooster that moos like a cow. The zoo management loved the idea, realizing it would be a great attraction since the story had already become famous.

The following day, Uncle Harpole went to MacHenry’s farm, bought the cow, and placed her with the rooster in the petting zoo. The pair brought many visitors to the zoo to see the famous “Rooster That Wouldn’t Crow.”

Uncle Harpole returned home happy because he had finally found the perfect solution for the noisy rooster.
