It is told that on a beautiful sunny day, the chickens came out of their nest while enjoying themselves and playing. They decided to spend the day in the fields for recreation and enjoying the beautiful golden sun rays. Among the chickens was a small gray chicken. The other chickens constantly mocked her because of her small size.
The chickens went out jumping in happiness. When they started walking, the white chicken stopped and called out to her companions: Wait, my sisters, for today we will compete and see who will be the strongest and fastest. Before we begin, we must mock this gray chicken that we can hardly see.
Then she continued with arrogance: My color is wonderful, the color of purity and clarity, and it is the color of milk that small children feed on to grow, and also adults consume it to maintain their bones.
The black chicken responded with the same tone of boasting and arrogance: I am the black chicken, my color is the king of colors, it is the color of the night that the Creator, blessed and exalted is He, created, and made it a dwelling for people and safety from the fatigue of work. Then she continued with mockery: As for this gray chicken, she annoys me with her gray color and her weak body.
The yellow chicken advanced and stood in the middle of the group and said with pride: Look, my dear friends, at my wonderful color, as if it were bars of pure gold, and my color is also the color of the sun disk that bestows its radiance upon people and gives them warmth in winter.
The red chicken advanced and stood shaking off the dust particles attached to her red feathers, then she said with haughtiness: As for me, my color is the color of blood that runs in the veins, and my color is also the color of the fire that Allah created for people to cook their food on and warm themselves with in winter.
The gray chicken was listening to the chickens’ words and cried, saying: I am from the creation of Allah, blessed and exalted is He, so why do you mock me? I wonder at you, for my color is the color of the clouds subdued by Allah’s permission to drop rains upon the earth, watering the earth and crops. Without rain, the earth dries up and people perish.
Then she dried her tears and said to them: If you mock me because of my little eating, then Allah, blessed and exalted is He, has forbidden us from wastefulness in eating food. It would have been better for you when you saw me weak to say to me a kind word, and advise me to pay attention not to let my running and effort exceed my ability. By doing so, I would preserve your favor, and we would all become friends and sisters who love each other.
Then the gray chicken looked at the sky and saw the sun preparing to set and depart, so she said: The time to return home has come, and I must return now. But I must call my sisters before night comes upon them lest they lose their way and the wolf eats them.
She began to shout and call out to her companions until they came to her and knew her location. They had seen the wolf close to them, and nothing saved them from it except their running toward the voice of the gray chicken whom they had mocked earlier. She did not take revenge on them and leave them to lose their way and be eaten by the wolf, but rather was the reason for their salvation.
