There was once a king who had a beautiful daughter. Many young men wanted to marry her, but the king thought carefully about the matter and found that they weren’t good for his daughter. Among those who wanted to marry her were the Prince of Fire and the Prince of Rain.

The Prince of Rain came to the king’s daughter and said to her, “Will you marry me, daughter of the king?” She answered yes in agreement. At the same time, the Prince of Fire came to the king and said, “I want to marry your daughter. Will you consent to give her to me to be my wife?” The king said, “Yes, I agree.”

The king sent to his daughter and said to her, “My dear daughter, you will marry the Prince of Fire. I have given him my promise.” The girl said, “No, I can never marry the Prince of Fire. I must marry the Prince of Rain. I have promised him. What shall we do?” The king wept bitterly, grieving over his daughter’s fate. When he thought about the matter, he said to her, “You cannot marry either one, whether the Prince of Fire or the Prince of Rain.”

Then the Prince of Fire and the Prince of Rain came to the king and his daughter. The king said to them, “Tomorrow will be my daughter’s wedding day.” The Prince of Rain asked, “To whom?” And the Prince of Rain asked, “But to whom?” The king replied immediately, “To the winner of the race, I will marry my daughter to the winner.”

On the day of the race, many people came to the city and gathered, and they all wanted to see the wondrous race that the king would hold to see who would marry his daughter—the Prince of Rain or the Prince of Fire. Some people said the Prince of Fire would win, and others said the Prince of Rain would win.

But the king’s daughter kept thinking and thinking about whom she should cheer for until she reached the conclusion that she wanted the Prince of Rain to win, for she was the one who had chosen him. She wanted the Prince of Rain to win because she loved him. She said to herself, “Yes, I love him, oh God. This is the difficult equation. I wish he would win.”

The awaited day came, and the day of the race arrived. When the time to begin the race came, the drummers beat their drums, and the king gave permission to start this wondrous race. The race began. The winds helped the Prince of Fire flare up quickly.

But where was the Prince of Rain? No one saw him. The daughter was sad about that and kept weeping and weeping, for she believed he had abandoned her and his love for her. She thought she would marry the Prince of Fire, whom she didn’t love and held no feelings for.

The people were shouting, “Look! What is this? The Prince of Fire is near the finish! And the Prince of Rain hasn’t appeared yet! What is this! What is this! The Prince of Rain has started descending from the sky and extinguishing the Prince of Fire. It was heavy rain, coming down at the right time so the Prince of Fire couldn’t finish the race.”

The daughter wept, but she wept with joy for her beloved who hadn’t let her slip from his hands. She wept as she had never wept before. Oh God, what a wonderful feeling! The people also wept with joy, for the Prince of Rain was the winner. From that day, the Prince of Fire and the Prince of Rain became enemies.

The king gave his weeping daughter to the Rain, and she was very happy, happy with her beloved, which made the whole kingdom happy for the sake of the king and his daughter.

Celebrations were held, drums were beaten, music and songs played, and ululations rose throughout the kingdom to celebrate the marriage of the daughter to the Prince of Rain. It was a happy wedding, and everyone who attended prayed for them to have righteous children.
