In the beautiful forest with tall trees, clear sky, and vast fields here and there, all the rabbits lived in that forest in close huts, where they cared for each other, worked together every day, then the family gathered at night to exchange conversations, then everyone went to their hut for rest and sleep, so they could wake up early in the morning for work.
That was the rhythm of the rabbit family’s life. One night, the beautiful family gathered, began playing and having fun, and the night filled with much dancing and singing. The old grandfather rabbit got up and went to the water well to bring some water. He lowered the bucket, moved the rope a little, and began raising the bucket, but he felt the bucket was light to carry much water. So he lowered it again, lengthening the rope a little, then raised it to drink some water, then placed the bucket on the well’s edge.
The grandfather rabbit felt anxious about what happened. The meaning of what occurred was that the water inside the well had begun to run out and decreased greatly. If that happened and the well dried up, the plants would die, and the rabbit family wouldn’t be able to withstand thirst and hunger, and they would all die.
The grandfather rabbit was disturbed by these thoughts and returned to his council. The grandmother rabbit noticed his distraction and asked him what was wrong. He told her what had happened. Her eyes widened in horror, and she said to him: We must inform all members of the rabbit family and warn them of the coming danger.
The grandfather rabbit interrupted the family celebration and ordered them to listen to him. They all fell silent in astonishment and resentment at his interruption. The grandfather rabbit told them what had happened. Some of them shouted that this couldn’t happen and the well would dry up, while others mocked him and said to him: Go dig a new well. They all returned to their play, and the grandfather rabbit was sad. He told his wife, the grandmother rabbit, that they would leave the area early in the morning, he and she, searching for another place suitable for digging a well. His wife agreed to obey him.
Early in the morning, the grandfather rabbit rose with all activity and set out with his wife, the grandmother rabbit, searching for a place suitable for digging the new well. After several hours passed, the grandfather found a tree with birds standing on it, guarded by one of the dogs. It seemed from the place that there was plenty of water underneath.
The grandfather rabbit asked permission from the dog and explained to him what had happened and his desire to dig a well in this place. The birds listened to what the grandfather rabbit recounted and sympathized with him greatly. They decided, along with the dog, to cooperate with the grandfather in digging this well.
Everyone began digging. The grandfather rabbit and his wife dug with their front feet. The dog carried the soil far away to make room for them. The birds brought them some grains to eat while they performed this hard work.
Not much time passed before the well adjacent to the rabbit family dried up, and the plants began to die. They began to feel extreme thirst, their strength failed, and they no longer had any strength to bear this weakness. They regretted not listening to the grandfather rabbit’s advice and decided to leave the place after it completely dried up.
Water gushed from the new well. The birds rejoiced greatly. The dog began helping the grandfather rabbit and his wife surround the well with some bricks. Then the grandfather rabbit set out searching for his family, whom he missed. But he didn’t go long before he found the place empty, with no trace of them. He returned, tears drowning his eyes.
The birds and the dog decided to help the grandfather rabbit search for his family. The dog sniffed the place around the old well, and the birds tracked him until they found the family. Indeed, the grandfather and grandmother went to them and found their strength had failed, scattered under tree trunks. The rabbit thought with the dog about making a stretcher from tree trunks and their old boughs. The dog pulled it after they placed the small rabbits, unable to move, on it.
Thus, the grandfather rabbit provided his family with food and drink until their health improved and saved them from death before the foxes and wolves devoured them.
