When people agree on something despite its error, they think it is the most correct. Although this rule cannot be generalized, Islam at its beginning emerged a little strange, and despite the spread of disbelief at that time and people’s consensus on it, it was not the most correct.
It is told that the wife of one of the kings was late in conceiving, so the king sent to all the doctors of the kingdom to look into her matter. God willed that she be healed at their hands, so the queen became pregnant. Days passed one after another, and the king prepared for the arrival of the crown prince until the day came when the queen gave birth to her child.
But unfortunately, the king and queen’s joy was not complete with the birth of the child, for the little prince had only one ear. The king was very annoyed when he saw the prince and feared that a psychological complex would develop in him when he grew up and found himself different from others, which would prevent him from the throne of the kingdom.
So he gathered all the kingdom’s advisors and presented the matter to them. One of them said: The matter is simple, my lord. Cut the ear of every newborn, and thus the new babies will be similar to my lord, the little prince. The king was very pleased with his clever advisor’s idea and ordered that the ear of every newborn be cut. From that day, that became the country’s custom.
Whenever a new baby was born, they would cut his ear until years passed, and the entire society became with one ear. One day, a normal young man with two ears like the rest of humans came to the kingdom. When people in the kingdom saw him, they wondered at his creation and made him the mockery of everyone. They always mocked him and called him the two-eared one, as if it were an insult.
They kept doing this to him until he was fed up with them and decided to conform to them in what they were in. He cut his ear with his own hands to become one of them and escape their continuous mockery. The young man did this despite knowing that his creation was the original and their creation was the distortion they did to themselves. They didn’t stop for one minute to think about the reason for cutting their ears, and that God, as long as He created them in their faces, it is for a known reason and not extra.
But it is a disability of society that happens in every time and place and needs work and thinking to end. It happened in the society of our master Ibrahim, who was disabled by polytheism, and the society of our master Lot, who was disabled by perversion, and the society of our master Shuaib, who was disabled by usury.
Error remains error even if people agree to do it, and correctness is correct even if no one does it. There is a jurisprudential rule that says: (People’s consensus on something does not make it permissible). So if you are certain of the correctness of what you do, do not give it up no matter what happens, and do not change it for anyone.
