It seems something worries the sheep in their pen, as they gather in a circle with their heads and horns touching. A halo of severe anger sweeps over them and makes their life miserable. They whisper among themselves: Why did their shepherd owner bring this huge dog to the farm? Why does he stay behind them in their coming and going?
Why does he watch them and scold them as if he has no work but to chase after them, yet with all that the shepherd gives him special care and attention? For this reason, the sheep decided to complain to their owner. In the evening, after the sheep returned from pasture, the sheep approached the shepherd and said in a sad unified voice: Baah, our owner and shepherd, we feel sadness and severe pain.
Because we see you caring more about the dog’s matter than about ours. You spoil him, feed him, and play with him, while he presents you nothing like what we present to you. We give you wool, milk, and money, while he gives you nothing but enmity and barking. We give you everything while you give us nothing.
Our food is grass which we search for ourselves, and we amuse ourselves. Why this treatment? We never wronged you daily. The sheep didn’t notice the dog was listening to their conversation. Before his owner answered, the dog approached them kindly and said to them: You are right in what you said.
I don’t deny that, but you forgot a very important matter. Were it not for my care for you and my constant guarding of you, you would be prey to wolves and hyenas, and then you couldn’t present your owner meat and wool. For this, it’s necessary to care for me so I remain strong and able to guard and care for you. The sheep then realized the error of their thinking, regretted, and were comforted by the dog’s words. From that time on, they grazed happily with the guarding of the brave dog who watched over their safety and peace.
