There was a worker who washed clothes. He had a dog and a donkey. The dog and donkey helped the worker in many ways. One night, a group of thieves broke into the worker’s house. The dog heard the thieves and started barking at the thieves. The worker woke up from sleep, and the neighbors also woke up. One of the thieves said: What is this? A dog. Let’s escape from here. The thieves felt fear of the consequences of the dog’s barking. They tried to escape, but the neighbors caught them during their escape.
Then the worker said that he was happy to have this dog in his house, and that had the dog not barked, the thieves would have stolen all the contents of the house. The worker was very grateful to the dog. Everyone was happy with the dog.
Since that day, the donkey started thinking that the worker believed the dog was more useful than him. Therefore, the donkey decided to make the worker see that he was better than the dog. He wanted to prove to the worker that he was as useful as the dog.
After several days passed, when night came, two other thieves tried to enter the worker’s house. The thieves knew what the dog had done before, so they were more cautious this time. The thieves started looking in every direction in the house. There they saw the dog sitting outside the house. One of them said to the other: It seems the dog won’t disturb us this time.
The two thieves started moving with caution inside the house, because the dog was outside and wouldn’t disturb them. But they didn’t know that the donkey was in the house. The donkey was watching everything that was happening and thinking that this was the appropriate opportunity to prove to the worker that he was better than the dog and more useful.
The donkey thought that if he started screaming with a high voice, the thieves would escape, and consequently, the worker wouldn’t notice anything. The donkey started performing some strange behaviors. The worker became alarmed and entered to the donkey. The donkey didn’t stop what he was doing, so the worker felt angry and brought the whip and started beating the donkey, saying to him that the whip beating would teach him not to make such sounds at night.
The donkey felt shocked because what he planned failed completely, and the worker didn’t understand anything. Then the dog noticed the donkey and came to talk to him with arrogance, saying: It would have been better for you to care about your affairs and work first, and not try to be like me. At the same time, the thieves escaped, and the sounds inside the house became silent.
The lesson from the story: Every creature has wisdom and a function. The dog’s function is protection, and the donkey’s function is carrying loads and things. And to get the appreciation you strive for, you must perform your work with precision and conscience without thinking of anything else.
