The events of the story revolve around the difference between freedom and slavery, where two friends meet - a dog and a wolf. The dog’s condition was much better than the wolf’s. The dog was fat and healthier than the wolf, while the wolf was destitute, extremely thin to the point that the bones of his body protruded from the heavy burden and hunger.

As soon as the wolf found his friend the dog, they talked about their conditions. Each confessed to the other what had happened to him. Despite the dog’s comfortable condition, when he invited the wolf to share in his work and prosperous life, the wolf refused strongly, for the reasons that will follow in the story.

Beginning of the story: It is told that one day, there was a fat dog, tied with a chain in front of his dwelling. Signs of satiety, comfort, and bliss appeared on him. A weak, hungry wolf met him, who couldn’t find enough food, and his bones appeared due to his extreme hunger and weakness.

The dog and the wolf: The wolf asked the dog about the reason for his comfort and bliss, and complained to him about the severe hunger and constant fatigue he felt. The dog said: If you did what I do, you would be comfortable and enjoying life, and you could live as I live.

The wolf asked him: What is your work, my brother? The dog answered: I guard houses from thieves at night. The wolf said: This is what I wish for and what I want. Take me with you, please, so I can find a dwelling to sleep in, and covering to protect me from the cold in winter.

The secret of the chain: The hungry wolf approached the fat dog and saw a mark on his neck. The wolf asked him about it. The dog told him: My master ties me by the neck during the day with this chain, so I don’t leave the house for a single minute, and I don’t bite people who visit the house owner. At night he unties the chain.

Refusal of slavery: The wolf stepped back and said to the dog: Leave me in my condition, my friend, and enjoy this bliss and happiness alone, for I love freedom and will never accept humiliation and slavery. I prefer to live free, enjoying freedom with what I feel of extreme poverty and hunger, rather than living enjoying all means of comfort and bliss, bound by chains of humiliation and slavery. The wolf left his friend the dog and bid him farewell, wishing him more prosperity and comfort, and went far away seeking a life that provides him with a prosperous living without restricting his freedom.
